The VF-4 Lightning III began development in 2005 under the initial designation of the VF-X-4. Developed as a successor craft to the VF-1 Valkyrie, the VF-4 Lightning III was designed as a variable fighter that emphasized mobility in outer space.

与之前使用了ova中一条辉机涂装的vf-4不同，这次的vf-4g，是完全为玩具设计的原创涂装。 遍布机身的黑色条纹，胸部的黄色黑色涂装，黑色底色配黄色点缀的垂直尾翼和腹鳍，还有那个骷髅标志，都很明显是在致敬VF-1经典的罗伊·福卡专用机。

VF-4G Lightning III（闪电三式）由河森正治设计，VF-4G是动画《超时空要塞》系列故事中统合军为取代VF-1而开发的次世代主力战斗机。 其气动外形设定，源自于洛克希德公司的SR-71黑鸟式侦查机，“闪电三式”命名则是来自美英两国生产过的两代闪电式战斗机。
