VHR Cabernet Sauvignon is an estate-grown wine of place, the culmination of the Phillips family’s evolution from grapegrowing to winemaking over three generations at Vine Hill Ranch.

To produce a true wine of place, we take a minimal touch approach to winemaking: harvesting at optimal ripeness, meticulous sorting of fruit, cold-soaking, extended maceration, use of native yeast and new French oak barrels. Grapes from VHR’s selected blocks are vinified as separate lots to promote the full expression of the vineyard.

The 2022 VHR Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is highly structured and expressive, with tremendous energy and opulence. Dark red fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice, and citrus saturate the palate with myriad layers, breadth, and texture.

Growers since 1959, Vine Hill Ranch has farmed the finest Cabernet Sauvignon winegrapes for leading Napa Valley vintners. The inaugural release of the 2008 VHR, Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon fulfills our desire to create a singular wine from our seventy acre vineyard nestled at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains.

"While very limited in its production, the 2021 VHR Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine of tremendous focus and complexity. Fruit harvested from Vine Hill Ranch blocks 1, 3, 4 and 6 contribute to a wine of exceptional site expression and varietal character, harmoniously highlighting the attributes of the individual vineyard blocks.

Great concentration is the hallmark of this structured, dark and ageworthy estate-grown wine from a vineyard long sought after by other producers. From a dense aroma of tightly packed fruit, oak and espresso it moves to powerful dark chocolate, dried black cherry and dark mineral flavors wrapped in burly tannins. Best 2027–2040. — Jim Gordon.
