The mission of VMAQ-1 is to conduct airborne electronic warfare in support of Fleet Marine Force operations or other units as the Commandant of the Marine Corps directs.

Since its activation in 1992, VMAQ-1 has maintaied the highest levels of combat efficiency. The squadron has provided tactical electronic warfare support to Marines, sister services, and allies on 15 separate deployments; 13 of which were in direct support of combat operations in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

In July 1992, VMAQ-2 split into 3 separate squadrons and formed VMAQ-1, -2, & -3. The "Playboys" of VMAQ-2 fly the Grumman EA-6B Prowler out of MCAS Cherry Point, NC. There mascot is the world-famous "playboy" bunny and this is their "checkered-desert camoflauge" bunny with the "Can Do Easy" motto.
