Formed in 1990 to serve the interests of active duty, retired and former Marines of all ranks & MOS who have served or are currently serving in Marine Corps aviation reconnaissance or electronic warfare units.
After five years in Vietnam, VMCJ-1 received orders to stand down on 1 July and prepare to return to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan on the 15th. Although the 1st MAW would remain in country for another year, the separate 1st MAW (Rear) under BGen Robert F. Conley was already in place at Iwakuni with two fixed-wing groups, MAG-12 and MAG-15.

On 1 Sep 1975, VMCJ-1 was decommissioned at MCAS Iwakuni and was replaced by two detachments from stateside squadrons. One detachment of four RF-4Bs came from the newly formed VMFP-3 squadron at MCAS El Toro, CA which combined all RF-4B photo recon assets into a single squadron.
