VMI's regimental system is the military component of the Corps of Cadets. It provides a grounding in the military system, and promotes a strong sense of belonging, pride, and commitment. Leadership cannot be developed by an individual in isolation.

In keeping with its founding principles and unlike any other senior military college in the U.S., VMI enrolls cadets only and awards bachelor's degrees exclusively. The institute grants degrees in 14 disciplines in engineering, science, and the liberal arts. [9]

Because cadets live and work in close association with fellow cadets, respect for the rights of others becomes their way of life and leads to a strong bond of loyalty.

5 天之前 · VMI has furnished over 200 public computers for cadet use in its academic buildings, including the Barracks Study Room, a computer lab in the barracks (adjacent to the Barracks Help Desk) that is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

2022年7月14日 · Included in the assembly of cannons on so-called Battery Heights were two guns manned by VMI cadets, lined up behind a partially demolished rock fence. Under the command of Lieutenant Collier H. Minge, a fellow cadet, they would be the first from the institute to see combat and would not disappoint, handling their guns like seasoned professionals.

On Oct. 17, 2020, the Washington Post published a story detailing the racial discrimination experienced by some Black cadets at VMI. Two days later, then-Gov. Ralph Northam ordered an investigation into VMI’s culture. In June 2021, an independent investigation of VMI found that a culture of racism existed at the Institute.
