VMO-2 was activated at Quantico, Virginia on Nov 1, 1943, with the designation (Artillery Spotting Division) VMO-251. VMO-251 departed for San Diego, where it carried out more training. In Jan 1944 the squadron was redesignated VMO-2, and moved to Hawaii in Feb.

VMO-2: Nicknamed "Cherry Deuce”, Marine Observation Squadron Two was activated at Quantico, Virginia on November 1, 1943. Originally designated VMO-251, the group moved to San Diego in December for additional training. Redesignated VMO-2 in January 1944, the squadron moved to Ewa, Hawaii for close-support training with the 2nd Marine Division.
