Marine Observation Squadron 6 (VMO-6) was an observation squadron of the United States Marine Corps which saw extensive action during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

March - July 1945, VMO-6 participated in the Okinawa operation, flying from the Yontan airstrip. October 1945, VMO-6 deployed to Northern China to provide aerial reconaissance for Marine units operating there.

2004年7月25日 · In 1965, VMO-6 deployed to South Vietnam. Except for a short period when VMO-6 operated a small O-1 "Bird Dog" detachment, the VMO was a helicopter squadron. It initially performed gunfire spotting missions, as well as liason and medevacs.

On September 1, 1965, MAG-36, 1st MAW, disembarked from the USS Princeton to what became the Marine Corps Airfield, Ky Ha. VMO-6 was among the several MAG-36 squadrons to disembark, making a helicopter assault on that area. The MAG-36 had to provide it's own security while at Ky Ha due to no availability of Marine Corps grunt forces.

2004年4月13日 · Capt. Steve Pless of VMO-6, flying gunship escort out of Ky Ha for a medevac on 19 Aug, was enroute back into Ky Ha when he heard an Army Chinook (CH-47) pilot on the "guard channel" indicating that he had landed in an unsecured LZ with mechanical problems.

With the addition of HO3S-1 helicopters and pilots of HMX-1 Quantico, Virginia, VMO-6 became the first active Combat Helicopter Unit in the United States Marine Corps when it departed for the Far East on 14 July 1950._ VMO-6 arrived in Kobe, Japan with four HO3S-1 Sikorsky Helicopters and eight OY-1 fixed wing aircraft._

VMO-6 was only ever attached to MAG-25 for administrative purposes, and so briefly that it is not generally recognized as part of the group. However from 4-10 and 18-31 May 1946 the squadron was assiged to MAG-25 while based in Tsingtao, China. Its OY-1 aircraft can be seen in aerial photos of the airfield.

2011年10月21日 · Marine Observation Squadron 6 (VMO-6) traces it history to 1 December 1920, when Flight E, 3d Air Squadron was activated at Quantico, VA. Within the next seven years the squadron underwent a series of re-designations (Division 1, VF-1M; Division 1, VO-3M; Division 1, VO-6M) as new aircraft were assigned.
