Operationally, VP-90 deployed to NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan twice in 1993 and provided support to the fleet in traditional Lion style. Maintaining perfect maintenance statistics and operational readiness the squadron completed the first ever "Special Interest Flight" flown by a Reserve Squadron in the South China Sea.

Aerial mining and antisurface warfare (ASUW) are secondary roles. VP-90 was commissioned in 1970, and utilized the SP-2H Neptune aircraft.
