Chain topology In a chain topology, there is only one path between any two stack members. A VSF link or hardware failure in a chain topology may cause a stack split and result in network disruption; VSF split detection may be used to mitigate this scenario.

Virtual Switching Framework, or VSF, defines a single virtual switch comprised of multiple individual physical switches that are interconnected through standard Ethernet links. These links are referred to as VSF links. These physical switches will function as one device with a unified control and management plane. Multiport VSF links are supported.

This is not an issue as, in this setup, all members are (by default) connected to each other. The recommendation to use a ring topology is, as you noted, only applicable to topologies consisting of more than two switches.
