The Volkswagen Type 4 is a compact / midsize family car, manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen of Germany as a D‑segment car from 1968 to 1974 in two-door and four-door sedan as well as two-door station wagon body styles. The Type 4 evolved through two generations, the 411 (1968–1972) and 412 series (1972–1974).

In February 1974 on the German market, the 4-door 412L was priced at DM 10,995 (DM 11,145 for the 412 LS). The 412 replaced the 411 in August 1972 in Germany, having been restyled by designer Brooks Stevens. Halogen lights were fitted, the headlight surround was reshaped and the nose panels were redesigned.

Both 411 and 412 models were air-cooled, had rear placement, rear-wheel drive and a boxer engine. In total, Volkswagen produced only 367,728 Type 4 models during that period (which is not that much compared to the Volkswagen Beetle). Quite a few people found these models less beautiful compared to the VW Type 3.

The Volkswagen 412 LE is one of the Typ 4 range of cars from Volkswagen. Its 1.7 litre engine is a naturally aspirated, overhead valve, 4 cylinder that develops 79 bhp (80 PS/59 kW) of power at 4900 rpm, and maximum torque of 133 N·m (98 lb·ft/13.6 kgm) at 2700 rpm.
