VXE-6 personnel deploy each year to Antarctica between the months of October and March, the time when Antarctica ex-periences continuous sunlight (its austral summer). VX-6 was redesignated VXE-6 on 1 January 1969. Its nickname, the Puckered Penguins, eventually became the Ice Pirates. The squadron's home base changed to NAS Point Mugu in 1974.

VXE-6 has its roots in "Operation High Jump", the fourth Antarctic Expedition conducted by Rear Admiral (USN) Richard Byrd. In December 1946, this expedition, involving sea-based Martin PBMs and land-based Douglas R4Ds, set out to conduct an extensive aerial survey of Antarctica.

Following its first Antarctic deployment, VX-6 moved from Pax River to Quonset Point in Mar 1956 Puckered Penguins , tail codes JD, XD , based at Point Mugu California, with the task of support the United States Antarctic Program.

BUNO 148320, was used in 1963 to make a historic one time flight, non-stop from Capetown, South Africa to McMurdo Station,Antarctica.
