
Studies of the skeletons tell us about the people onboard the Vasa.
The skeletal remains of at least 17 and perhaps as many as 19 people were found during the excavation of Vasa. Most of these are men from the crew, but there are also women and a child. In studies of the bones, we are able to determine their height, age, diet, and medical history.

Most of the sculptures that had decorated the exterior of the hull were also found in the mud, along with the ship's anchors and the skeletons of at least four people. The last object to be brought up was the 11.7-metre-long (38 ft) longboat, called esping in Swedish, found lying parallel to the ship and believed to be towed by Vasa when she sank.

An Archaeological Examination of the Human Remains associated with Vasa
When Vasa sank in 1628, approximately 30 lives were lost. Through the course of the excavation of the ship in the 1950s and 1960s, over 1,500 human bones were recorded and cataloged, which are currently believed to represent 15 individuals.

The skeleton remains of the people drowned when the Wasa capsized and sank in 1628 were first studied in 1961 immediately after the excavation of the salvaged ship. A total of 1553 pieces of human bones were found during this excavation.
In 1961 Vasa was salvaged from the Baltic Sea, and skeletal remains from approximately 15 individuals were found scattered in and around the ship. After osteological analysis the skeletons were buried in a cemetery in 1963. When the remains were initially found, the skeletons were in quite good condition and seemed well preserved.
