On October 15, 1943 commissioned in the U.S. Navy (USN) as Fighting Squadron 20 (VF-20) at NAS San Diego under the command of Lt. Commander Frederick E. Bakutis (USNA class of 1935). On January 12, 1944 lost is F6F Hellcat 66237 pilot Ensign Robert F. Thomas (survived). On April 12, 1944 moves to NAS Alameda.

VA-34, nicknamed the Blue Blasters, was an Attack Squadron of the U.S. Navy. The squadron was established as Fighter Squadron VF-20 on 15 October 1943, redesignated as VF-9A on 15 November 1946, as VF-91 on 12 August 1948, and as VF-34 on 15 February 1950. It was finally redesignated VA-34 on 1 July 1955.
