Following the use of tankettes, the Universal Carrier was introduced in the late 1930s to provide mechanised transport to the Vickers MG Platoon both during WW2 and after the war. It wasn’t initially used with the Vickers machine gun as there was a dedicated ‘Carrier, Machine Gun’ which mounted the Vickers in the forward compartment.

A large heavy duty version of the Vickers design existed in 12.7mm form and known rather informally as the "Big Vickers" or "Vickers .50".

MGC numbers (including the first 3000 men of the Motor Machine Gun Service, Royal Artillery, later absorbed into the MGC) ran from number 1, up to just over 200,000 by the date of disbandment, not including those men who were renumbered with seven-figure ones in 1921, and those who joined and only ever had seven-figure identification.

It cannot be disputed that the machine gun, of whatever type, played a key role in the changing picture of warfare. What is interested about the Vickers is that the mainstay of the type - the Mk. I - remained in British Army service from 1912 through to 1968. It was used by the majority of fighting units, both Regimental and Corps based.
