Vivian Winona Pinn (born 1941) is an American physician-scientist and pathologist known for her advocacy of women's health issues and concerns, particularly for ensuring that federally funded medical studies include female patients, and well as encouraging women to follow medical and scientific careers.

Dr. Vivian Pinn was the first African American woman to chair an academic pathology department in the United States, at Howard University College of Medicine. Dr. Vivian Pinn was the first full-time director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health.

2013年7月22日 · Medical director Vivian W. Pinn was born in 1941 in Halifax, Virginia. She grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia. Pinn received her B.A. degree from Wellesley College in 1963. She earned her M.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1967 where she was the only woman and only minority in her class.

On October 24, 2024, the School of Medicine and UVA Medical Alumni Association hosted a ceremony in Pinn Hall Auditorium to unveil a portrait of Vivian W. Pinn, MD, honoring her life, leadership, and enduring legacy in the field of medicine.

Pinn, M.D., was the first full-time director of the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health from 1991 and Associate Director of NIH for Women’s Health Research from 1994 until her retirement in 2011 when she was named Senior Scientist Emerita at the NIH Fogarty International Center.

Vivian W. Pinn, MD, was the inaugural full-time director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1991 and Associate Director of NIH for Women’s Health Research from 1994 until her retirement in 2011.

As associate dean, Pinn focused on expanding admission of Black students, other students of color, and women, and on creating initiatives and networks to mentor these students once they arrived at Tufts. She currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the School of Medicine.
