Vladivostok (ˌvlædɪˈvɒstɒkVLAD-iv-OST-ok; Russian: Владивосток, IPA: [vlədʲɪvɐˈstok]) is the largest city and the administrative center of Primorsky Krai and the capital of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia.

Vladivostok is the chief educational and cultural centre of the Russian Far East. It is the site of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Far Eastern State University (founded 1920), and medical, art education, polytechnic, trade, and marine-engineering institutes.

In 1883 the city's first newspaper (Vladivostok) began, and the following year the Society of the Amursky Territory Study (headed by Fyodor F. Busse) was founded. In 1887 a public library opened, and a professional theater performed in Vladivostok for the first time.
