The Wood Badge is a common standard open to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Created over 100 years ago, it has played a pivotal role in shaping leaders within the Scout Movement. Its distinct design was inspired by a necklace brought back from Southern Africa by the founder of the Scouts, Robert Baden-Powell.

The Wood Badge is an award for Scout leader training, first awarded by The Boy Scouts Association in the United Kingdom in 1919 and subsequently adopted, with variations, by some other Scout organizations. Wood Badge courses teach Scout leadership skills and instil an ideological bond and commitment to the organizations.

All WB courses in the Atlanta Area Council follow the curriculum as outlined in the Wood Badge for the 21st Century, which is published by BSA. The classes and activities in this curriculum is based on five themes: Living the Values, Bringing the Vision to Life, Models for Success, Tools of the Trade, and Leading to Make a Difference.

Wood Badge is an advanced, national leadership course open only to Scouting volunteers and professionals. Scouters from Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouts, Explorers, and district and council Scouters all are welcome and belong here.

The Wood Badge refers to the two wooden beads on a length of boot-lace worn around the neck of the wood badge holder. Sometimes, the wood badge may come with three or four beads in total for Assistant Leader Trainers and Leader Trainers respectively. All these, regardless of the the number of beads, are collectively called the wood badge.
