UNT Libraries house the complete news archive of NBC 5/KXAS (formerly WBAP), the oldest television news station in Texas. The archive contains historic broadcast footage, scripts, advertisements, still photography, and research files dating from 1950 through 2012.

WBAP was the first television station in Texas and the only television station in the entire southwest region of the country. For over 65 years the news station (renamed NBC 5/KXAS in 1974 following its sale to LIN broadcasting) continued to broadcast programming from their original location on “Broadcast Hill” in Fort Worth, Texas.

KXAS-TV (Channel 5) informally signed on the air as WBAP-TV on September 27, 1948, to broadcast coverage of President Harry S. Truman's re-election campaign speech at the Texas & Pacific terminal building in downtown Fort Worth.

2025年1月16日 · WBAP host Chris Krok is no longer with the Cumulus Media Dallas station after more than 12 years with the station, sources close to the situation confirm to Barrett Media. Krok hosted the 8 PM-Midnight show at the station. He had previously spent two years in afternoons at sister station KLIF before moving to WBAP.

Among other "Firsts" of WBAP-TV are the first live entertainment in Texas ("Flying X Ranchboys"), and first Texas colorcast via NBC-TV, 1954. Today Channel 5 serves aproximately 60 counties in Texas and Oklahoma.

WBAP (820 kHz) is an AM news/talk radio station licensed to Fort Worth, Texas, and serving the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. WBAP is owned by Cumulus Media and broadcasts with 50,000 watts from a transmitter site in the northwest corner of Mansfield. Its programming is also simulcast on WBAP-FM (93.3) in Haltom City.
