In the early hours of June 6, 1944, a 20-year-old German soldier hurried to his post at Wiederstandsnest 62 (WN62) overlooking Omaha Beach to man his MG 42 machine gun. Tossed around in the English Channel in front of him were over 34,000 American troops waiting for their chance to land on that beach and earn their place in history.

This beach exit was strongly defended by a German strong point, called Wn 65. During Occupation, German forces fortified access to the Ruquet valley between Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer and Colleville-sur-Mer considerably.

“ Wn” is the German abbreviation of Wiederstandnest, which literally means “nest of resistance”. In military terms, this is a strongpoint. The Wn 65, located northeast of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, defends the entrance of the valleuse of the Ruquet from the counter-slope to the west. It consists of several shelters and tobrouks and a casemate type H667.

WN65 is a concrete casemate located in the centre of Omaha Beach in the Easy Red Sector. The casemate housed a 50mm anti-tank gun which is still present today. After it's capture on D-Day it became the first American Headquarters on Omaha Beach.

2022年1月9日 · This Atlantic Wall bunker Regelbau 667 is part of Widerstandsnest 65 which defended the valley of the Ruquet to the West. The bunker is famous for being one of the first to be captured on D-day at Omaha Beach, sector Easy Red. After it’s capture it was used as an American headquarters.
