The document summarizes the development of standardized isolation precaution signage in Washington state hospitals. A taskforce comprised of various hospitals developed signage based on CDC guidelines to reduce variation between hospitals and improve safety.
Preferably an Airborne Infection Isolation Room (AIIR). If not available, follow facility guidelines. • No special precautions. Kitchenware sanitized in dishwasher. • Bag linen in patient’s room. Avoid excessive handling and do not shake linen. For biohazard waste, follow Category B Medical Waste guidelines.

Standardization of Isolation Signage in Washington State Hospitals
Results: Over a 6 month period, the taskforce reached consensus on a package of 7 isolation signs: Standard, 5 transmission-based, and 1 “Special” precautions. (see example below) Isolation requirements on the signs were based on the 2007 CDC isolation guidelines.
