The American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) [a] was a formation of the United States Armed Forces on the Western Front during World War I, composed mostly of units from the U.S. Army. The AEF was established on July 5, 1917, in Chaumont, France under the command of then-Major General John J. Pershing.

World War I was the first time in American history that the United States sent soldiers abroad to defend foreign soil. On April 6, 1917, when the United States declared war against Germany, the nation had a standing army of 127,500 officers and soldiers.

The American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) consisted of the United States Armed Forces (mostly the United States Army) that were sent to Europe in World War I to support the Allied cause against the Central Powers.

Beginning in April 1917, the United States (US) army rapidly transformed from a diminutive constabulary force to a 4 million man draftee army, from which was formed the 2 million strong American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) that decisively tipped the balance of power on the Western Front to the Allied cause in late 1918.

The core of the AEF was eventually composed of three armies under American command, although the Third Army was used for occupation service only. The First Army was organized in August 1918 and fought its first battle at the St. Mihiel Salient. Two weeks later it initiated the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
