2017年5月3日 · The axe looks as though the wood was kept wax polished for many years and has a lovely patina. It looks to have seen limited use and has some marks from use on the handle. The blade is very clean and it has the original rivets.

During World War I, entrenching tools became extremely important with the introduction of trench warfare. Entrenching tools designed for the individual infantryman soon appeared with short straight handles, T-handles, D-handles, and other designs.

The head of the ax bears a maker’s mark of a sword piercing a crown. The brown leather cover is complete and intact, with the belt loop being somewhat dry. The ax has an overall length of approximately 13 1/4 inches.

2011年11月16日 · I found a hand axe head (only) at an antique shop for around $3. It is marked US, that is it, no other markings, of course I grabbed it. It was a chunk of rust, but worthy of being salvaged, so I got a hardware shop handle and replaced it. Should they be painted Olive Drab or left bare metal/wood?

German WWI Pioneer Axe with leather carrier. The axe is in very sound condition, exhibiting pretty much storage wear only. The leather carries was on the axe at the time of our puchase, the only markings that I have found are II Grt. The carrier shows considerable wear with some broken straps, but remains pliable. This is a fine example of a World War One Hungarian officer’s Fokosbalta (blade with knob). The design for its steel head is that of a crescent shaped axe blade with a square-pyramidal knob. The edges on the head are smooth and the surface for its metal has become pitted over time.
