The StG 44 (abbreviation of Sturmgewehr 44, "assault rifle 44") [a] is a German assault rifle developed during World War II by Hugo Schmeisser. It is also known by its early designations as the MP 43 and MP 44 ( Maschinenpistole 43 and 44 ).

One of the four producers used only the designation: MP44. (In fact there exist a few MP45. One quick-witted person may have thought: We have made MP43, last year we made MP44, and now here in 1945 it must be MP45). German army studies had shown that few combat engagements occured at more than 300 m and the majority within 200 m.

The German MP-44 Sturmgewehr provided the impetus for the development of all the world’s great assault rifles. The story that Hitler jumped for joy at the reports from his generals about the performance of this revolutionary battle implement, and in his glee immediately dubbed it Sturmgewehr, is also a falsehood.
