Our iconic logo is at the heart of all our communications – and is recognized all over the world. What is the story behind WWF’s panda logo? The inspiration for our logo came from Chi-Chi: a giant panda that arrived at London Zoo in 1961 – the same year that WWF was created.

The new WWF Logo is clean and simple, and gives our most valuable asset, The Panda, the space to communicate. This replaces current logos in use, such as the tab with rounded corners and Value Tab versions. Our colour palette takes its inspiration from the natural world around us.

The World Wide Fund for Nature, known as WWF (it used to be called the World Wildlife Fund and still is in the US and Canada) has a universally recognised logo which remains a potent symbol for the primary focus of the WWF’s work: the conservation, preservation and restoration of natural environments around the world.

The inspiration for the panda in WWF’s world-recognised logo came from Chi-Chi, a giant panda that had arrived at the London Zoo in 1961, when WWF was being created.

The WWF logo is made up of the panda icon and the WWF wordmark (figure 1). You can find more information about the WWF logo here. The panda icon (figure 2), used without the WWF wordmark, does not have to conform to the same rules as the WWF logo and can therefore be used in more creative ways.
