Isuzu was launched in 1921 commissioned two years later in 1923. Isuzu was then sunk on June 20, 1945 by American submarines in the Java Sea.

Isuzu was the second Nagara-class light cruisers. Shortly after she entered service, she was assigned to patrol the Yangtze River in China. Between 20 Aug and 10 Dec 1928, she was commanded by Captain Isoroku Yamamoto. Between 1 Dec 1936 and 1 Dec 1937, she was commanded by Captain Tamon Yamaguchi. In the mid-1930s, she patrolled the Chinese coast.
