The Grumman TBF Avenger (designated TBM[1] for aircraft manufactured by General Motors) is an American World War II -era torpedo bomber developed initially for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several air and naval aviation services around the world.

2023年3月29日 · From the middle of 1942, the TBF/TBM was the only torpedo bomber used by the US Navy, serving on every American aircraft carrier in service after that date. A handful of TBF-1s took part in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, though these had not arrived in time to be operated from carriers and instead were based at the airfield on Midway Island.

Despite losing five of the six Avengers on its combat debut, it survived in service to become one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. Greatly modified after the war, it remained in use until the 1960’s.

This particular plane is a General Motors TBM-3E Avenger, Bureau Number 91436, built by Eastern Aircraft in Trenton, New Jersey. It was accepted by the U.S. Navy n August 3, 1945, and did not fly combat missions during WWII. Postwar, it was based at Atlanta, San Diego, and Seattle, then retired after 600 hours total time.
