Waiapu Valley, also known as the Waiapu catchment, Waiapu River valley or simply Waiapu, is a valley in the north of the Gisborne Region on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Found in the north-east of the Waiapu Valley, it flows north-east from the joining of the Mata River and the Tapuaeroa River (both of which flow from the Raukumara Ranges), then passes by Ruatoria before reaching the Pacific Ocean at Rangitukia. The Waiapu River is the major artery and spiritual heart of the Ngāti Porou landscape. Its two principal tributaries, the Mata and Tapuaeroa rivers, join to form the Waiapu just west of State Highway 35, near the junction with the road to Ruatōria.

The Waiapu River valley is the heartland of Ngāti Porou. A large number of marae are found in the valley and in neighbouring areas, both in townships such as Tikitiki and Ruatōria and in more rural settings.

2019年1月14日 · This area is referred to as Te Riu o Waiapu, the Waiapu Valley, named for the ancestral mother river, and home to many meeting houses carved by men trained in the Iwirākau tradition between 1830 and 1930.
