The Waipu Wildlife Refuge is a 3.5-km-long and c. 200-m-wide sand spit located at the mouth of the Waipu River and adjacent to a small estuary. The sand spit covers c. 128 ha and has a low-lying sandy tip on the southern side of the river mouth, and stable dunes with a moderate vegetation cover of spinifex and low herbaceous and woody plants.
