2016年1月19日 · Believe it or not, the wallaby, a small marsupial that belongs to the same taxonomic family as the kangaroo, can be found in Hawaii, reported to only inhabit a small section of Kalihi Valley. Kalihi resident Olin Lagon uploaded the video to his Instagram shortly after crossing paths with the elusive creature around 9 p.m.

Though native to Australia, the brush-tailed rock wallaby has established itself right here on Oahu in a small, but nonetheless established colony in the heart of Kalihi Valley. Three of these Oahu wallabies were brought to a private zoo in Honolulu in 1916, but neighborhood dogs attacked.

Wallabies have been sighted in Nuuanu and Halawa Valleys over the years, but now the wallaby colony is believed to have hunkered down in Kalihi Valley. They live above a military base on private property, so you’ll have to ask permission to access the area.

Recent Wallaby Hawaii sightings have been documented in Kalihi Valley. B ut anecdotal evidence suggests that the small population has moved into neighboring Nuuanu Valley as well. Because they are non-native and non-threatening, the Department of Land & Natural Resources does not monitor their population.

The only confirmed colony of rock wallabies on Oahu was found in the cliffs above the Material Testing Laboratory of the State of Hawaii in Kalihi Valley (Kramer, 1971; Lazell, 1980). However, Kramer also suggested that another population may be present in Nuuanu Valley.
