It was formerly known as Wanxian or Wan County (simplified Chinese: 万县; traditional Chinese: 萬縣; pinyin: Wànxiàn). Prior to Chongqing's formation as a direct-controlled municipality, Wanzhou was part of Sichuan province. The urban core of Wanzhou is 228 km (142 mi) away from Chongqing's city proper.

Wanxian Bridge, or Wanzhou Bridge (simplified Chinese: 万县长江大桥; traditional Chinese: 萬縣長江大橋; pinyin: Wànxiàn Chángjiāng Dàqiáo), is a reinforced concrete arch bridge built over the Yangtze River in 1997. It is located in the vicinity of the Three Gorges Dam in Wanzhou, Chongqing, China.

Formerly called Wanxian City, now named Wanzhou District, it lies in the northeast of Chongqing municipality. As a regional hub district in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and one of the ten major ports on the River, Wanzhou is widely known for the hustle and bustle of its markets.

Wanxian situates at 327 km away from Chongqing and 119 km from Fengjie in waterway. It has long history more than 2,000 years. Wanxian was once an important city in formal Sichuan Province, like Chengdu and Chongqing, and has been known as " a Gateway to Eastern Sichuan"- now part of the newly established provincial class city - Chongqing.

Wanzhou, formerly named Wanxian(a county near Chongqing), has been a district of Chongqing since the municipality was established in 1997. Located at the western end of Yangtze River's renowned Three Gorges region, Wanzhou is an important port along the river.
