The treble clef is a type of musical notation that is used to indicate which pitch should be played when reading and writing music. It is also known as the G clef because the symbol at the beginning of the staff (a stylized letter “G”) encircles the second line of the staff, indicating that line to be G4 (or G above middle C). The treble clef was historically used to mark a treble, or pre-pubescent, voice part. Instruments that use the treble clef include violin, flute, oboe, cor anglais, all clarinets, all saxophones, horn, trumpet, cornet, vibraphone, xylophone, mandolin, recorder, and bagpipe. Guitar also uses the treble clef, sounding an octave lower than written.
