Download Wii Backup Manager and format the drive to FAT32 using that. It's a useful tool for converting game files in any case so you should have it to hand if you're messing with using backups.

By using Wii Backup Manager or other tools, you are able to split a WBFS file into multiple 4GB parts to fit on a fat32 drive. Nkit removes both the padding and a lot of unnecessary data, slimming down file size significantly.
