East Germany, [i] officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR), [j] was the historical German state that existed from its formation on 7 October 1949 until its reunification with the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG, commonly known as West Germany) on 3 October 1990 in the eastern half of Germany.
