The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF; / ɡ ɪ f / GHIF or / dʒ ɪ f / JIF, see § Pronunciation) is a bitmap image format that was developed by a team at the online services provider CompuServe led by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite and released on June 15, 1987.

Graphics Interchange Format (often shortened to GIF) is a file format for images. [1] It is a raster graphics format; that is the image has a fixed size. CompuServe developed and introduced the format in 1987. Today, it is widely used on the World Wide Web.The format supports up to 8 bits per pixel, or 256 colors. It also supports animations.

GIF je 1987. godine pod originalnim imenom 87a predstavila tvrtka CompuServe kao nadomjestak ranijem formatu nazvanom RLE, koji se također koristi za download slika, samo je bio u crno-bijeloj verziji. Godine 1989. ista tvrtka nudi noviju, poboljšanu verziju GIF-a, imena 89a.
