I use this diz every day to make roving, it is small light and portable. It is a slightly larger size than is common because I find it is more comfortable to hold in the hand and use without cramp in the fingers.

A diz takes prepared fiber and makes it into a long uniform roving so that it is ready for spinning. You don’t need to explain its purpose. If a spinner is looking for a diz then they know what it does and how to use it! To make a wooden diz we are going to turn a round piece of wood that is slightly dish shaped.

This curved wooden diz for creating roving from combed top has three holes of approximately 3/16", 1/8", and 1/16" and comes with a hook to help start the fiber through the chosen hole.

Using the diz is the last step to making a combed top after the combing is complete. The wool is drawn off the comb through the diz, which is a disc or oval made of wood, plastic, or cardboard with a hole in the middle. Thread the fiber through the hole of the diz, and push the diz toward the comb as you draw the wool off the comb to form the top.
