Statewide burning restrictions will remain in effect until the spring fire season closes on May 31. The Division of Forestry has issued burning guidelines on its website at wvforestry.com/fire-laws. Regulations include: All fires must have a safety strip. The safety strip itself must be cleared of burnable material and be at least 10 feet wide.

WV's Northern Hardwood Forests occur mainly in the Allegheny Mountains, but small patches of similar vegetation can be found in the Cumberland Mountains and in the Ridge and Valley. A large proporation occurs on the Monongahela National Forest.

West Virginia is home to the world’s largest population of Running Buffalo Clover, a delicate plant that flowers between mid-May and June. This clover, known to botanists as Trifolium stoloniferum, is a federally endangered plant and hard to find. Once believed to be extinct, patches of Running Buffalo Clover are being monitored in West Virginia.
