A total knee replacement (also called total knee arthroplasty) might be more accurately termed a knee "resurfacing" because only the surfaces of the bones are replaced. There are four basic steps to a knee replacement procedure:

All patients need x-rays, but not immediately post operatively; Radiographs are best at detecting component wear; After patient is diagnosed with infection, additional imaging is not needed unless clinically indicated; If infection is suspected, but aspiration negative, a repeat arthrocentesis should be performed before additional imaging
