On 4 December 1950, the first successful interception of a jet bomber by a jet fighter occurred when a B-45 was shot down by a Soviet-built MiG-15 inside Chinese airspace. During the early 1950s, 40 B-45s were extensively modified so that they could be equipped with nuclear weapons.

It was 74 feet, 0 inches (22.555 meters) long with a wingspan of 89 feet, 6 inches (27.279 meters) and overall height of 25 feet, 2 inches (7.671 meters).

On February 24, 1947, the prototype XB-45 took its maiden flight from Muroc Army Air Field. 131 test flights in total were performed by three XB-45s; one was destroyed afterward and the other two were accepted by the United States Air Force on July 30 and August 31, 1948, respectively.
