The XP-51G was a development aircraft that combined the light weight airframe developed for the XP-51F with an experimental Rolls Royce RM-14SM engine, capable of producing 2,000hp at 20,000 feet. The new aircraft achieved a top speed of 495 mph, and a climb rate of 5,000 feet per minute, well over 1,000 feet per minute faster than the P-51D.

6 天之前 · They were the fourth and tenth production aircraft. One of them, 41-038, still exists today at the EAA Musuem in Oshkosh, WI. The Army was not in a big hurry to test the XP-51 seemingly bogged down in testing of other aircraft like the P-39, P-38 and P-47. Testing of the XP-51 began in October of 1941 with very high remarks.

In January of 1943, North American Aviation suggested to the USAAF that they build a special lightweight version of the Mustang. It was agreed that a thorough redesign would be carried out, mainly to reduce weight but also to simplify systems, improve maintenance, and enhance performance without changing the engine.

Designed in 1940 for use by Great Britain, the first prototype XP-51 was finished in just 117 days. The Allison-powered P-51A was dubbed the Mustang Mk. 1 by the British and first deployed in tactical reconnaissance in the spring of 1942. The U.S. Army’s Eighth Air Force received its first P-51s (B models) in 1943.

2025年3月10日 · NAA designed the XP-51G for lighter weight / higher performance. This is one of the light-weight P-51 prototypes. They never saw production. Story is that this airframe was on its way (literally) to the scrap yard in 1977, when the truck was stopped on the highway by a friend of John Morgan. Great story. This is a long-term restoration.
