It was a large high-wing flying boat with Allison T40 engines driving six-bladed contra-rotating propellers. It had a sleek body with a single-step hull and a slender high-lift wing with fixed floats. The Navy ordered two prototypes on 27 May 1946. Designated XP5Y-1, the first aircraft first flew on 18 April 1950 at San Diego.

The first XP5Y-1 flew at San Diego on 18 April 1950. That summer—despite continued problems with the T40 engines—the aircraft established a turboprop endurance record of 8 hours, 6 minutes. The first prototype flew until it crashed when elevator control was lost during a high-speed dive on 15 July 1953.

2014年5月12日 · The first XP5Y-1 made its first flight fitted with four XT40 turboprop engines 1.5 year later; on 18 April 1950. It took off from the San Diego bay flown by Convair test pilot Don Germeraad and with Sam Shannon as co-pilot. In August 1950 the XP5Y-1 set a world endurance record in its class with a flight of 8 hours and six minutes.

The Convair XP5Y was a long range patrol flying boat designed in the United States in the late 1940s. Due to engine problems and changing priorities only the prototype flew but the design was reworked as the R3Y transport aircraft.
