The Kalihi YMCA in Honolulu, Hawaii, began its operations out of a small wartime building near the Bishop Museum in 1946, before moving to its current location on Kalihi Street in 1952. From its inception, Kalihi YMCA focused on the needs of neighborhood youth. By 1968, the YMCA had 1,081 members and over 50 youth clubs from grade school to high school. Reaching Out to Teens—on Their Own Turf. In the 1960s, gangs began to form in Hawai‘i. Kalihi YMCA sent outreach worker Dan Horiuchi to Chicago to study the City’s approach.

Since 1962, the Kalihi Y branch has been the YMCA of Honolulu's headquarters for Y programs focused on helping teens throughout Oahu with substance abuse, gang, legal and family struggles. Currently, the Y Substance Abuse Treatment program is offered onsite at 23 middle schools and high schools.
