Ya-xiang Yuan received the B.Sc. degree in computational mathematics in 1981 from Xiangtan University, Hunan, China, and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics in 1986 from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, U.K. From 1985 to 1988, he was a Retherford Research Fellow at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge.
