The fish of Yellowstone National Park, in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming (U.S.), include 13 native fish species and six introduced or non-native species. Angling for trout has been a pastime in the park since its creation and trout species dominate the fish inhabiting the park.

Fishing regulations in Yellowstone National Park are structured to strongly support native fish conservation goals. Cutthroat trout are the sole, native trout of the park and were the dominant fish species here prior to Euroamerican settlement.

Lake trout are a primary predator of young fish, including Yellowstone cutthroat trout, in Yellowstone Lake. We restore and maintain the important ecological role of native fishes. Bald eagles, ospreys, pelicans, otters, grizzly bears, and other wildlife eat native fishes.

About 8,000-10,000 years ago, 12 species of native fish, including Arctic grayling, mountain whitefish, and cutthroat trout, dispersed to this region following glacier melt. These native fish species provided food for both wildlife and human inhabitants.

The primary activity of Yellowstone’s Native Fish Program is removal of the invasive lake trout from Yellowstone Lake. It’s astounding what harm a single invasive species can have on the Yellowstone ecosystem. Lake trout are predatory, and one mature lake trout can eat approximately 41 native cutthroat trout per year!

In Yellowstone, bald eagles, ospreys, pelicans, otters, grizzly bears, and other wildlife take precedence over humans in utilizing fish as food. None of the fish in Yellowstone are stocked, and populations depend on sufficient number of spawning adults to maintain natural reproduction and genetic diversity.
