The North American YF-93 was an American fighter development of the F-86 Sabre that emerged as a radically different variant that received its own designation. Two were built and flown before the project was eventually canceled.

2022年10月3日 · Instead of using the open inlet like the Sabre, the YF-93 relocated the air inlets to the fuselage sides, with the nose used to accommodate an SCR-720 interception radar. The inlets were of NACA duct design, intended to provide a more efficient and streamlined air intake than scoop intakes that were more common.

2025年1月24日 · North American YF-93A (USAF s/n 48-318, NACA-151) during flight evaluation and comparison of a NACA submerged inlet and a scoop inlet. The YF-93A’s were the first aircraft to use flush NACA engine inlets.

Originally designated F-86C, the YF-93 was larger and heavier than the Sabre and intended as an escort fighter. This is the first prototype, flown on 24 January 1950 as 48-317. It was fitted with flush NACA engine intakes but these were found to restrict the airflow at higher angles of attack.

Unlike the F-86 and its nose air intake, the YF-93A includes a nose cone that houses the radar system. To appeal to the single-engine trim, sleek, flush air intakes were moved to the sides of the fuselage for a more modern approach to the design.
