Regular production of the D40LF began in 1991. After the 2009 model year, New Flyer discontinued the LF series of buses with the traditional style front and rear ends. The D40LF was replaced by the D40LFR. Production for some existing orders of the D40LF continued to the end of 2010. Air with ABS and optional traction control.

York Region Transit 8911-8924 were New Flyer D40 buses built and delivered in 1989. Originally from Richmond Hill Transit, they were acquired by YRT during amalgamation in 2001. They were renumbered from 511-524 to avoid confusion with ex-Vaughan Transit buses.

York Region Transit 1020-1038 are New Flyer D40LFR buses built and delivered in 2010. These buses were the first D40LFRs ordered by YRT after New Flyer discontinued the D40LF model, and are also the first EPA 2010-compliant vehicles ordered.
