Goujian (Chinese: 勾踐; r. 496–465 BC) was a king of the Yue state. He succeeded his father, Yunchang (允常), to the Yue throne. Goujian's reign coincided with arguably the last major conflict of the Spring and Autumn period: the struggle between Wu and Yue states, wherein he eventually led his state to victory, annexing Wu.

The Sword of Goujian (traditional Chinese: 越王勾踐劍; simplified Chinese: 越王勾践剑; pinyin: Yuèwáng Gōujiàn jiàn) [1] is a tin bronze sword, renowned for its unusual sharpness, intricate design and resistance to tarnish rarely seen in artifacts of similar age.

In the 23rd year of Emperor Jing of the Zhou Dynasty, Goujian ascended the throne as the King of Yue State. In the first year of Goujian, Helu, the King of the Wu State, invaded the Yue State. Goujian deployed his army in Xieli (today’s Jiaxing) to resist the invading army.
