With two days of riding the new Yamaha WR250 and YZ250FX we’re more impressed than ever with Yamaha’s new direction in the off-road world. The two bikes are, as we’ve reported earlier, almost the same product. But there’s a very big difference in philosophy. The fact that the YZ250FX even exists is very big news.

Based on the competition-proven YZ250F, the new frame provides what Yamaha states is the right amount of strength and flex for the perfect balance of stability and cornering performance. The redesign also includes model-specific engine mounts and lightweight subframe.

Based on the championship winning YZ250F, the WR250F is tuned with enduro specific settings to bring the fun and provide the fastest way through technical single-track.

The WR chassis is virtually identical to the YZ250F’s, which everyone loves. It’s reasonably light (241 pounds without fuel on our scale), and it has that magic KYB suspension that Yamaha’s dirt models are famous for.
