2024年4月30日 · Two years short of the Z80's 50th birthday, Zilog has called it curtains on the 8-bit MPU. What legacy does this microprocessor leave behind? As of June 2024, the venerable Z80 microprocessor, released by Zilog in 1976, will no longer be available as a standalone part. Zilog Z80 die, date code 1990.

After taking photos of Z80-compatible CPU's from DDR and USSR we finally got the original Zilog's Z80. This chip had datecode 9012. If you compare the dies of original Z80 and DDR/USSR ones - you can see that original Z80 has much denser peripherals layout.

The CMOS version of the Z80 , ( Z84C00 ) , which is the only version that is currently made, wasn't even created by Zilog , technically the die design was created by Toshiba. Other companies still do have licenses to the Z80 die.

KR1858VM1 - Z80-compatible CPU, manufactured in USSR. Die marking "U880/6" suggests that it was also designed in east Germany company VEB Mikroelektronik "Karl Marx" in Erfurt (MME). Compared to T34VM1 die size is shrunk by a factor of 1.6, reworked IO.
