ZAZ Zaporozhets (Russian: Запоро́жец pronunciation ⓘ) was a series of rear-wheel-drive superminis (city cars in their first generation) designed and built from 1958 at the ZAZ factory in Soviet Ukraine. Different models of the Zaporozhets, all of which had an air-cooled engine in the rear, were produced until 1994.

ZAZ or Zaporizhzhia Automobile Building Plant (Ukrainian: ЗАЗ, Запорізький автомобілебудівний завод, Zaporiz'kyi avtomobilebudivnyi zavod or Zaporiz'kyi avtozavod) is the main automobile manufacturer of Ukraine, based in the south-eastern city of Zaporizhzhia.

Since 1987, ZAZ began to produce a small front-drive hatchback “Tavria” with a 51 hp engine. The company’s products were in demand and by the end of the decade the annual production of cars Zaporizhzhya plant reached 80 thousand.

In the early 70’s, Soviet built Zaporozhets microcars were exported to more than 20 countries, including England, Germany and France. Special versions were prepared for export markets. They called ZAZ-968E and ZAZ-968GE. But the car that you see in the photographs is far from them, although it looks very similar.

The ZAZ Zaporozhets entered production in 1958 and would remain in production, in various forms, until 1994. They were built at the ZAZ factory in Soviet Ukraine and, like the Volkswagen Beetle, were destined to become a 'people's car.' It was the cheapest Soviet car and the most affordable to most individuals.
