ZEESM exhibits a distinctly and deliberately futuristic vision, and the specific ways in which this vision is being expressed in Oecusse will have significant impacts on the current and near-future lives and livelihoods of Oecusse residents (Meitzner Yoder 2015).

Oecusse-Ambeno recently has been designated a Special Social Market Economic Zone (ZEESM) by the Timor-Leste Government and large scale infrastructure development and building construction is underway. Lifau near the main coastal town of Pante Macassar was the first place the Portuguese landed in 1515 and this site is marked by a memorial park.

ZEESM operates a scheduled flight service between Dili and Pante Macassar, Oecusse on a daily basis (Thursday excluded). The flight along the coast takes around 30 mins. Charter flights can also be arranged for this route and to other domestic destinations.
